Temple construction of lord Siva has folklore and goes back to the time of Mahabharata. It is narrated as- after the war, the Pandavas trekked to Himalayas for seeking blessings from Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva thought to put pandavas on test and hence did not appear in his original form instead disguised them as herd of buffalo and tried to mislead the path of Pandavas. Bheem seeing the herd played a trick. He stood on two rocks with his legs opened wide. The buffaloes were made to pass under Bheem’s leg. One of the buffalo refused to pass under his leg resulting in fight with Bheem. In this fight, Bheem ripped apart the buffalo in pieces. The place where the parts of buffalo fell, were considered sacred and Pandavas later constructed temples of Shiva to worship.
